Meet the Trainer

Jennifer King, CPDT-KA

I have enjoyed the extraordinary companionship of dogs my entire life so it’s not surprising I’ve chosen to work with them on a daily basis. My career with dogs began at a local veterinary hospital where I was a receptionist. While working there I became curios about how to help dogs and their human guardians truly enjoy all the areas of life they share. The experience of teaching my own young dogs and the remarkable relationship this built, sparked a passion for training which motivated me to learn to do this professionally. Now I’m helping other people develop this same connection with their own canine companions and creating well-mannered dogs at the same time.

I began to learn more about dog behavior and training in 2009, by reading all the latest science-based research I could find and by enrolling in a dog training course through Raising Canine, owned and operated by Susan Smith, CDBC, CPDT-KA. This course required me to find a mentor or internship program which led me to The Dog Door in Asheville. Through these avenues I was introduced to seminars and conferences and soon my knowledge, experience, and confidence grew. I earned my national certification in professional dog training through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT) in 2013. I continued to work as a trainer at The Dog Door until the time came for me to start my own training and behavior business.

I’m passionate about helping people understand why trainers should be held to higher standards of education and should use only proven, gentle and humane training methods. I regularly attend national conferences as well as local continuing educational events and am a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT). I’m also a Doggone Safe presenter with a passion for teaching children how to be safe around dogs as well as how to respect them.

My philosophy is that whether walking, playing, or training, every interaction should be pleasant and beneficial for both you and your dog, always building on mutual trust, understanding and respect. The attitude that’s brought to the training session by both myself and the dog’s guardian is critical to its success. I strive to fully understand the goals as well as the challenges of each client and work hard to develop a plan that works for everyone, including the dog.
